ABOUT OSHAWA

As the largest municipality in Durham Region, Oshawa is probably most famous for its car industry, specifically General Motors whose Headquarters was in Oshawa. Once recognized as the "Automotive Capital of Canada" The McLaughlin Carriage Company, was founded there in 1876. The founder's home has been used in many films including Billy Madison, Chicago, and X-Men.

Production of automobiles stopped in 2019 with some devastating layoffs which unfortunately was the only news reported in the media. What people aren't hearing is the 2.8% increase in jobs from 2018. Roughly 70,000 jobs across Oshawa and more on the way as the 407 expansion is coming and the government has opened employment lands all along it's the path.

The education industry is also bustling in Oshawa with The University of Ontario, Durham College and Trent University creating thousands of jobs within the school system and for the industries around them.

The housing boom along the northern part of Oshawa is attracting many people from more expensive parts of the province as housing in Oshawa is more affordable. Oshawa boasts the largest "urban downtown core" east of Yonge Street. It's home to large communities of European immigrants from all ethnic backgrounds. Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, German have all found homes here due in large part to their skills in the trades, something that is much needed.

While subdivisions in northern Oshawa may be more popular for most, there is no lack of stunning million-dollar homes in gated communities, in downtown Oshawa. During the GM hay days, magnificent Tudor mansions were built to house the upper class of its time. Some houses that haven't been converted into historic sites or retail stores are still selling as homes. Other homes offer public tours of the beautiful architecture and memorabilia from that bustling era. The Parkwood Estate, home of the late R.S. McLaughlin, founder of General Motors of Canada, is now a national historic site with an incredible garden used for wedding photoshoots and social events.

Oshawa's reputation is changing, it's not all doom and gloom of General Motors - the city is more than just cars. Its parks, lakefronts, sports teams, and family. It's affordable housing which can't be said for many places west. Toronto is only 61kms away and thousands of people live here and commute to work on the 401/407 or the Go Train.

The opportunity along the new Highway 407 is endless, including an 839,000 sq ft mall that is being built near the University of Ontario campuses! An estimated 500 new jobs, an increase in the population and of household income all coming to Oshawa! Oshawa is on the world stage now as far as opportunities. The GM Plant is empty and it's attracting a lot of foreign attention.

If you are looking for affordable housing within commuting distance to Toronto, a safe happy place to raise your family - you need to check out Oshawa.
