ABOUT PORT HOPE

If you’re looking to settle in a small-town seeping with Canadian history dating back to the United Empire Loyalists, but with modern access to transportation, fine schools and recreation facilities then a serious look at Port Hope is a must.

The village of Port Hope was settled by British settlers in the early 18th century with the towns name being established in 1817. Port Hope was incorporated at a town in 1834. For the next 120 years the growth of Port Hope was slow resulting in most of the historic buildings remaining in place. Today, Port Hope is considered the best preserved 19th century streetscape in Ontario.

The 401-highway corridor runs across the north end of the town, with local bus service. The C.N. rail stops at the Port Hope station providing access to the Montreal-Toronto corridor. The travel time by rail from Port Hope to Toronto is 1 hour & 5 minutes. Docks are also available for pleasure boating at the town’s southern shores.

The Ganaraska River run through town to Lake Ontario providing excellent fishing. Each year a town regatta takes place on the river. If you're into fitness, the Jack Burger Sports Complex provides a 25m pool, therapy pool and whirlpool and an indoor skating rink all available to the public. The Port Hope Medical Centre provides an excellent health care response with doctors, dentists, counselling services, labs and x-ray. The nearby Northumberland Hills Hospital provides a full emergency response.

Housing in Port Hope is a cross section of older homes on mature property to new modern buildings, most sitting on large lots. This is an ideal place for those who work from home but can easily access the office in the big cities. Affordability is the key with good services, modern conveniences and a safe place to live.
