ABOUT PORT PERRY

First surveyed in 1809, Port Perry is rich with history and culture. The business community started the railway to Port Perry in 1867. The arrival of the first train in 1872 brought with it the town's first grain elevator that still stands today. Surviving many fires, it remains erect on the shores of Lake Scugog proudly, Canada's oldest grain elevator in existence.

People travel from all over southern Ontario to shop on the main street of Port Perry. Queen Street's storefronts, resemble the Victorian era architecture which sees a booming tourist industry in the summer. Beautiful cafes, restaurants, and antique stores line the street making your stroll enjoyable without a Walmart insight (it's there just not spoiling the old-time views).

To some, the waterfront in Port Perry resembles scenes from the picturesque tv show called Gilmore Girls. The town gathers around the park's pergola whilst the Farmers Market takes place and kids frolic in the water park, the dreamy ideal of small-town living. The docks are host to everything from weddings to bass fishing tournaments in the summer and fall. Port Perry hosts the Mississauga Pow Wow, The Highland Games and Street Fest. While there is plenty of free parking on the street and the lakefront, you may want to park a little west in the neighbourhood to see all the century homes that have been beautifully restored. If you enjoy driving a little north in the Autumn to see the trees change, you'll love Port Perry. Every street is lined with colourful large 100-year-old trees that look like a postcard.

In the winter, Lake Scugog is full of ice hut and snowmobiles. While tourism slows down in the winter it's still active for those seeking adventure. If you prefer to spend winter inside, the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino is minutes from downtown.

Due to its beautiful architecture and landscapes, Port Perry resembles small American towns such as Maine or New Hampshire and has been used as such for roles in programs like Welcome to Mooseport and the 6th season of The West Wing.

According to Toronto Life Magazine, Port Perry is #5 on the Next Hottest Places To Live. The cost of buying a 3-bedroom bungalow in Port Perry wouldn't get you a 2-bedroom condo in Toronto.

While it may seem far away, Port Perry is only 81 km from Toronto and people do commute for work using the 407 or the 401. Why wouldn't you? Considering all the beauty Port Perry has to offer, living here would be like living in a cottage country except not so far away. While there are new houses being built outside of the downtown core, Green Belt regulations in this area mean the small-town charm of Port Perry should never become urban sprawl.
