ABOUT WHITBY

Like several small towns in Ontario, Whitby played a role in World War II. While most locals know the story of Camp X, some pass it off as folklore when in fact it's true! Whitby was home to a Wartime spy training facility! Known today as Intrepid Park, a monument stands today in its honour.

Named after the British seaport town in Whitby, Yorkshire England, it was settled in the 1800s by Peter Perry. Whitby is also home to the only Elizabethan Castle, now known as Trafalgar Castle School. This was the private home for the Sherriff of Ontario County in 1859 (rumoured to be haunted!!)

Whitby is accessible by planes, trains, boats, and automobiles! Like most southern Ontario cities, it's centrally located on Hwy 401. 45 minutes from Pearson Airport and minutes away from the Oshawa Regional airport. You can also hop on the VIA to Montreal or the Go Train to Toronto! If water is more your speed the Port Whitby Marina is minutes from downtown and home to the Whitby Yacht Club.

If you're a nature lover you should know about Lynde Creek Marsh and Cranberry Marsh, beautiful areas for nature walks and migrating birds that will land on your hand for seed! Parking is $6 directly off Bailey Street and well worth the visit! Whitby is home to Ontario's largest Emu farm, called Hunter Farms. Bring your children to experience petting and learning about these unusually adorable big birds.

Outdoor enthusiasts who love winter sports can drive 18 mins north from downtown Whitby to the Ski Dagmar Hills. This location features 12 runs all different levels from novice to expert. Ski Lakeridge is a couple of minutes north of Dagmar  and is located in the Oak Ridge Moraine. This area offers year-round activities, everything from skiing and tubing to mountain biking and hiking trails in the warmer weather!

Locally, Whitby has the reputation of being the Sports Mecca of the Durham Region. With teams such as Whitby Fury, Whitby Warriors and more famously the Whitby Dunlops founded in 1954 there are 10 ice surfaces in 3 major hockey arenas. Golf clubs, soccer clubs, cricket clubs and the Track and Field HQ for a lot of Durham Region schools, there is no lack of play in Whitby!

Whitby is a 47 minute drive from Toronto. The express lanes which currently stop at Brock Road in Pickering are expanding to pass through Ajax and Whitby. Already, major additions have been completed, opening the region with the exit off the 401 to Lake Ridge Road. With the incredible housing boom around Taunton Road, this was a much-needed option for commuters.

Whitby is full of history, and community. Downtown Whitby still resembles old, turn of the century living. On Brock Street North, Mom and Pop shops and restaurants add to the small-town charm. At the Old Fire Hall, a farmers market runs every Wednesday from May to October. The area is surrounded by the most beautiful old homes dated as far back as 1858 yet within a minute drive you shop in the big box plazas.

If you're looking to leave the hustle and bustle of city living, Whitby is somewhere to consider. PS... little secret, Whitby's Lakeridge Road is also the sometimes faster "back-way" to get to cottage country!
