ABOUT PICKERING

Pickering, just 20 minutes outside of downtown Toronto is exploding with new and exciting places to play, eat and shop!

Industry continues pouring into the city, which now has a very defined “downtown” core. As it’s so close to Toronto, Pickering has always been known as the “sleeping community”. Those who work in Toronto live here because it’s easy to access the city via the Go Train, Go Bus, 401 and 407. Within the next couple of years, Pickering will host a massive Hotel/Casino complex called Durham Live which will see thousands of jobs created as well as a new Go Train Stop! The Sears wing of the Pickering Town Center has been closed off and a new condo complex is being built so people can live, shop, and go to work, 5 minutes from their living space!

Centered around the Pickering Town Center, restaurants such as The Pickle Barrel, Moxies, and Jack Astor's are now no longer a 15-minute drive east into Whitby. Pickering was always lacking in the restaurant department and dinner goers would need to leave the city limits - thankfully that’s no longer the case. With a huge ethnic population, Pickering is host to several restaurants and grocery stores that means you no longer must go into Toronto to eat ethnic food. Shops like Pacific or Blue Sky have everything you need close to home. Feel like something spicy? Patios Jamaican food on Liverpool or Chuuk Mexican Restaurant near the Liverpool Lakefront, Mr. Greek, Betty’s Hot Pot, Jaspers Fish, and Chips - there is no lack of variety in Pickering!

No matter where you live in Pickering, you are close to all amenities though you will still need a car to get around. While Pickering does have a bus system, it’s not yet as sophisticated as a major city. That being said, there is a large Senior Living community directly in Pickering’s center core, across from the mall, the medical center, the Recreation Complex, and Library making Pickering an ideal place to retire!

Historically, Pickering was established in 1811 and some hamlets as early as 1700, making this city a magnet for Film Makers. Taking a trip back in time is a 10-minute drive up to the Pickering Village Museum, a great place to bring the kids to learn a little history. It’s also where The Road to Avonlea is filmed as well as the movie Anne of Green Gables! The Big Hit with Mark Wahlberg was filmed near Petticoat Creek, which by the way is a huge public outdoor pool and park that kids here absolutely love!

It takes 5 minutes to leave the downtown city and you are into the beautiful countryside, with farms, apple orchards, and golf courses. Activities are endless in Pickering. There are 100’s of kilometers of amazing Nature Paths for hiking and bike trails such as The Seaton or Durham Forest for the serious mountain biker. The famous boardwalk at the lake is part of a 900 km Lake Ontario walking/biking trail. It comes alive with activity in the summer, everything from live music, festivals, fireworks, picnics, swimming, and boat rides. If you’ve lived in Pickering long, you know the only thing that used to be there was a log that stopped your car from rolling onto the beach!

Back at City Hall, like a scene from a movie, the tower bells ring, the gardens are stunning, and life is bustling! City Hall is the center for festivals such as the Christmas Tree lighting, Remembrance Day ceremonies, Food Truck Festivals, Ribfest, The Fair, Farmers Market, the roster is constantly updated with exciting activities making Pickering a happening place to live or visit!
